Let Food be Thy Medicine
The Hyderabad Public School Begumpet conducted the Round Square Conference on the topic “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” It took place on the 16th of September 2020. Schools from different parts of the world like Tamagawa Academy –Japan, St. Andrews School for Girls-South Africa, Vidya Devi Jindal School-India, Yadavindra Public School-Patiala-India, Sunbeam School Lahartara-India, Sunbeam Suncity, Varanasi-India, St. Constantine’s Tanzania, Rajmata Krishna Kumari Girls Public School-India participated in it.
The conference kicked off with an introduction of the team starting with the Mind behind the talk, Ms. Reena, followed by the introduction of the student organizers Maheen Rida, Sanchi Garg, and Pranav Neela.
Sanchi began by briefing us once again of how the event would take place and continued the introduction of the topic by talking about eating disorders and how around 10,200 deaths are results of eating disorders every year, which is one death every 52 minutes.
She also told us about how children with obesity are more likely to become adults with obesity and how many predict that this will be the first generation of kids who may not live as long as their parents.
The introduction was followed by an interactive session which was lead by Pranav Neela. We had asked all the participants to send pictures, recipes of their favorite healthy food, or some healthy eating tips a few days prior to the event, and during the interactive session, we gave everyone a chance to first introduce themselves and then tell us more about their submissions. Everyone had sent amazing recipes and tips and actively took part in the discussion and we learned a lot from this discussion itself but we had additional information by a nutritionist, Dr. Nida, who is also known as a “food doctor” which she adores being called, by the younger students.
She enlightened us on the topic of “Functional Foods” which all the students found very interesting and informative.
We had unfortunately not received some of the submissions and we wanted everyone to be included and everyone to get a chance to interact and thus we asked the ones whose submissions weren’t with us, a few simple questions and each one of them answered creatively and everyone being from different countries and cultures, had their own spin on each question and it was very interesting learning about different cultures.
Next, we were open to any questions the students, the faculty advisors, or the spectators had for our food doctor, Dr. Nida, and it was amazing to see that a lot of people wanted to have a healthy lifestyle and wanted to know what they could do and what’s best for them. Dr. Nida answered every single question the participants had and didn’t leave anyone unanswered. It was fascinating to see how she could answer every question and knew so much about health which is given as she is a nutritionist, but you get what we mean.
Close to the end, the program was summarised by Maheen Rida with healthy tips everyone could include in their lifestyle and quotes said by nutritionists and also non-nutritionists who understand the importance of staying healthy like Buddha and Thomas Edison. She also talked about how it is way more important to follow a healthy lifestyle and improve their immunity especially at a time like this where everyone is at risk from COVID 19. How we should not believe advertisements for products that claim on improving your immunity “fast” because immunity does not improve overnight and that’s a fact.
The event was concluded by Dr. Nida instructing us about what the daily routine for teenagers should look like. She advocated us on what to eat, how much to eat, and when to eat. But most importantly, she told us to stay away from gadgets as much as possible.
In conclusion, we all learned that a healthy body plus a healthy mind is a happy life!
