Round Square Conference Report – South Africa

Dates: 20th – 29th April 2024
Location: Woodridge Preparatory School and College, Port Elizabeth

With the picturesque misty mountains as a backdrop, Woodridge Preparatory School and College in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, hosted the Round Square Conference themed “Sizonqoba: Together We Triumph.” The event focused on Leadership and Adventure.

The Hyderabad team, comprising four students and in-charge teacher Ms. Charlotte Raj, embarked on their journey with great excitement. Upon arrival on a chilly Sunday morning, they received a warm welcome from the Woodridge team at the airport. Their adventure started with a quick brunch at Windfarm and a visit to the local Farmers Market, offering a glimpse into the culture of Port Elizabeth.

The conference kicked off on 22nd April 2024 with registration and a grand opening ceremony. Smartly dressed students, accompanied by their teachers, proudly represented their schools. Tridula Krishna Kumar, the flag bearer for Hyderabad Public School, paraded with the school song playing in the background.

On the second day, while students engaged in Barraza group discussions and attended keynote addresses, the staff enjoyed a serene walk down Francis Bay and a Canal Cruise.

The third and fourth days were brimming with adventure and excitement. Activities included ziplining at Tsitsikamma Falls, kayaking at Storms River, encounters with big cats at Tenikwa, observing mischievous monkeys and lemurs at Monkeyland, and admiring stunning birds at Birds of Eden. A highlight was the memorable walk with elephants at the Elephant Sanctuary. The day concluded with tents pitched under the clear, starry skies at Nature’s Valley de Vasselot Campsite, creating an unforgettable night.

The conference concluded with an impressive closing ceremony. Tridula, Aanya, Nihaar, and Ishanvi from Hyderabad Public School performed the viral song “Pasoori,” earning cheers and applause from the audience.
The conference provided students with opportunities to voice their opinions in Barraza groups, demonstrate grit and determination during adventures, and engage in cultural exchanges.

A short trip to Cape Town included a visit to Robben Island, where the concept of Apartheid was born, and a cable car ride to the 3,500-feet-high Table Mountain. The stunning vistas of blue beaches, white shores, and the town below were breathtaking.

Back home, the students carried memories of adventure and leadership that will last a lifetime. As they say in Zulu – ‘Dankie,’ meaning Thank you.
