“History Meets the Present” – A Reflection on the IIMUN Experience in Belgium
The recently concluded IIMUN Conference held in Belgium from 27th March to 2nd April 2025 was a perfect blend of the past and present, truly justifying the phrase “History meets the Present.” Representing The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, were two of our students — Suhrudi Dyavanapalli from Grade 12C and PDV Sahruda from Grade 9 — who participated in this prestigious international event.
More than just a Model United Nations simulation, the conference offered our students a platform to hone critical global skills such as diplomacy, debating, and resolution drafting. The event witnessed participation from schools across India and Europe, including countries like Belgium, Poland, and Germany, fostering a vibrant exchange of ideas and perspectives.
The opening ceremony was held at the historic conference room of the European Parliament Headquarters in Brussels — a city known not just as the capital of Belgium, but also as the de facto capital of the European Union. The session was graced by eminent personalities like Krišjānis Kariņš , former Prime Minister of Latvia; filmmaker Ms Hamisha Ahooja; and Mr Bhaskar Bhushan, Counsellor at the Indian Embassy in Belgium. Listening to these dignitaries was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and an inspiring lesson in diplomacy and global leadership.
The committee sessions were conducted at the International School of Belgium, where the competition was both intense and intellectually stimulating. Among the many outstanding participants, PDV Sahruda brought laurels to the school by winning the High Commendation Award, making us all proud.
Beyond the conference halls, the students had the chance to explore Belgium’s rich historical and cultural heritage. Walking through the vibrant streets of Brussels, they marveled at the architectural grandeur and political significance of the city. The Atomium, the iconic remnant of the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels and the most popular attraction in Brussels, was also witnessed by the students. Antwerp, with its dynamic mix of history, fashion, and art, offered a glimpse into Belgium’s cultural soul. Meanwhile, Ghent, known for its medieval charm and stunning canals, transported them to a different era altogether.
A particularly moving moment was visiting remnants of the Berlin Wall — fragments of history once confined to textbooks, now seen in person. Monuments and memorials encountered along the way served as powerful reminders of Europe’s complex past and the importance of peace building in today’s world.
This one-week journey was much more than a conference — it was a deeply enriching experience, filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable memories. As our students returned, they brought back not only accolades but also a broader worldview and a stronger sense of global citizenship.
