COP 27 Global meet-Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt 2022

Ankith Suhas Rao, a student of class 12 and the Head Boy of the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet (HPSB), was invited as a delegate to attend the 27th session of the Conference of Parties (COP 27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), at Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, from 3rd to 12th November 2022. He was one of the six students selected from about 40 countries across the globe to be invited to the blue zone at COP 27.

COY 17 offers a unique platform for student delegates to present their views, engage with the world’s climate change leaders, and expand their leadership potential. It provides avenues to apply their skills within the global community on individual and group levels while embodying social, economical and environmentally sustainable practices.

Ankith represented India at the 17th United Nations Climate Change Conference of Youth (COY 17), under the aegis of COP 27. He was accompanied by his teacher & mentor, Mrs. P. Usha Sudhir. Ms. Annapurna Chintaluri was the facilitator for the programme.

He was shortlisted to travel to Egypt among a team of 12 -14 students at school. His team at HPS comprised Shiv, Tanushree Bathula, Varsha Reddy, Riddhima Prasad, Praseeth Shashank, Ashritha, Ankitha, Nithya Kairavi, Harshitha PL, Rishitha C., Ananyasri Reddy, Shashivardhan Reddy, Aditya Bezzam, Achyuta Surya Ankit, Anirudh Suhas Rao and Shanmukhi Naidu.

All attending student and teacher delegates were a part of the #Decarbonize Student Leadership Summit, which is a part of Global Education and Taking IT Global. They were involved in several activities, such as mock COP, PR training, etc., in the run-up to COP 27.

They were also invited to attend interactive Climate Forward workshops hosted by the New York Times. There they had a unique opportunity to be part of talks and debates between climate and policy experts, academicians & activists from different parts of the world.
