Primary School
“All the world is a laboratory to the inquiring mind.”
Martin H. Fischer
Primary school years are the years of wonder where the child spends time exploring his world. These are the years when the child looks to the teacher with implicit trust, unconditional love and has unshakable faith in her word. To him, the teacher is the epitome of wisdom. To that child her word is law so much so that he says, “It is so because my teacher says so.”
The Primary Wing (Section) of The Hyderabad Public School houses close to 1600 students up to the 5th grade. There are 8 sections A-H for each class. Students are loved and taken care of by well qualified teachers. Classes 1 to 3 have single teacher system where the class teacher teaches English, Math, NS and SS. Classes 4 and 5 have subject teaching. Hindi, Telugu and Urdu are offered as options for Second Language. Students of Class 5 learn a Third Language, which they choose from Sanskrit, Telugu, Hindi, French and German.
Teaching in the Primary is activity based and every class has a Smartboard. Teachers make use of this digital support to complement their teaching. All learning is child centric and teachers ensure that no child feels left out. Teachers are warm and affectionate and do their utmost to make school a happy place.
Good schools like good societies celebrate & cherish diversity.
Besides academics, students have non-scholastic classes like dance, music, art, games and yoga. Active hands-on learning through Butterfly Fields for Science and Math, THOTS classes to enhance cognitive skills and Karadi Path for English enrich the teaching-learning experience. A fully equipped computer lab gives students the opportunity to learn the functionality of computers, practically. The library helps children explore the wondrous world of words.
The school holds extra-curricular activity classes every Friday. Students opt for an activity of their choice. Well qualified external trainers coach them in most of the activities, including music, calligraphy, art, craft, clay modelling, gymnastics, karate, public speaking, abacus and rope malkam.
HPS follows a five-day week system and the timings for the Primary School are from 8.00 a.m. to 3.25 p.m. The day begins with the Morning Assembly and classes take turn to host it. This is a special time for the students celebrating their birthdays as they get the opportunity to be wished by the entire Primary School.
Students have ample scope to exhibit their talent by taking part in the various competitions held from time to time. This helps tap their potential whether it be literary, musical, artistic or in the field of sports. The school also conducts all major Olympiads.
The academic calendar comprises two terms and students are assessed four times a year. The grading system helps to reduce the stress of exams.
Physical Education is compulsory and is included in the time table. Students play football, basketball, cricket, tennis and athletics. Competitive matches held in each of these sporting areas see students from the four houses – Nagarjuna, Nalanda, Taxila and Vijayanagar, vying with each other to emerge the winner.
As Deborah Meier rightly stated, “Good schools like good societies celebrate and cherish diversity.” HPS is a place where one finds students from diverse backgrounds and cultures, with varied interests and capabilities. Here every child is celebrated, every child is held precious because HPS is a firm advocate of the belief that when you build a child you build a nation.

HPS strongly believes that those who eat better feel better.
In that endeavor it strives to serve healthy, nutritive food to all its students. Children in the Primary are given snack twice a day – at 10 in the morning and around 1.30 in the afternoon. They have an early lunch at 11.20 a.m. which includes a fruit. Teachers accompany students to the dining hall and personally ensure that each child has a proper meal. Milk is served along with the afternoon snack.
