Annual Sports Day 2024
The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, celebrated its 101st Annual Sports Day on the 29th November, 2024 on the Front Field with the backdrop of the majestic Shaheen showcasing the sporting talents of its athletes. The legacy of HPS is filled with Sports playing a significant role since its inception. The grandeur of our Annual Sport Day is truly unmatched in the city.
The programme commenced with the arrival of the Chief Guest, Ms. Jyothika Sri Dandi, National Champion (Sprinting), Olympian (Paris Olympic 2024), who was welcomed by the Board of Governors and the Principal Dr. Skand Bali.
The Chief Guest, Ms. Jyothika Sri Dandi, lit the Meet Flame and handed it over to the School Games Captains Ritvik Poovadan &SS Samhita Reddy. The oathtaking ceremony was followed by the hoisting of the flags and declaring theSports Meet open. Balloons in the vibrant colours of the four houses were released into the blue skies to commemorate one of the most important events of the school.
The celebrations began with a march past by all the four Houses led by the Head Girl Saanvi Sagi & Head Boy Saarthak Lamba.
The first event of the day was the track and field events. As the students’ wild cheers rent the air, the athletes, with grit and determination, raced to achieve victory and glory for their respective houses. The most awaited event of the day, the 100 m sprint of Senior Boys & Girls, saw – Ritvik Poovadan & SS Samhita Reddy, both of Vijayanagar House being declared as the fastest runners of the school.
Following which 690 students of Grades 6 & 7 put up a captivating show titled ‘Talons of Triumph’. Dressed in vibrant costumes of Purple & White, all 690 moved in rhythm creating a striking symphony with their ribbons.
A perfect symphony of balance and concentration was on display in the next presentations ‘Shakti Pravaah, The Flow of Strength’, a Rope Malkhamb & Yoga Display.
Subsequently, the 981 students of Grades 3, 4 &5 dressed in Oxford & Cambridge Blues, in homage to our School Flag, left the audience awe-struck with their perfect display of Calisthenics through their display, aptly titled Fusion Fitness.
The final drill display for the day ‘Vibrant Vibes’, was by the students of Grades 8 & 9. Dressed in vibrant combinations of Green & Black, about 450 children moved as one in yet another mesmerising performance leaving the audience completely awestruck.
The traditional ‘Tug- of- War’ between teachers and students saw the teachers emerge victorious.
This was followed by a truly unique event which saw our Chief Guest, Ms. Jyothika Sri Danda, Olympic sprinter for India, participate in a 100m sprint with senior boys and girls of all four houses.
Then, the Principal, Dr. Skand Bali, presented an impressive Sports Report and lauded the achievements of the students.
The Chief Guest in her address thanked the management for inviting her. She commended the dedication, devotion and perseverance shown by the students on the field. She inspired students to play sports and never give in to failure. She narrated her own story which saw her progress from a fourth position in her first event to representing India at the Olypmics. She urged parents to encourage their wards to play sports as that is the best investment into their future. She congratulated the School for its continued support and promotion of sports through the years.
The energetic Equestrian display of cantering, trotting, galloping and tent- pegging brought about a perfect closure to the day’s events. The troop of horses with their perfectly matched riders showcased the signature elements of our legacy institution.
This was followed by the prize distribution with children cheering their Houses. The Vijayanagar House won the overall shield.
Sports is at the heart of HPS. It is not only about competing but also about having fun. This sporting event wouldn’t have been successful without the coordination, commitment and enthusiasm shown by everyone who did their job flawlessly.
