The Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, marked its centennial year with a dazzling display of sporting prowess and grandeur during the highly anticipated Annual Sports Day on November 10, 2023, at the prestigious Basalath Jah Stadium. The event unfolded as an unparalleled spectacle of athleticism and spirit, showcasing the school’s commitment to excellence in both education and sports.
The festivities commenced with the arrival of the esteemed Chief Guest, Dr. Pullela Gopichand, Chief National Coach of the Indian National Badminton Team and a luminary in the world of badminton. The Chief Guest was warmly welcomed by the Board of Governors, Principal Dr. Skand Bali, and Vice Principal Mrs. Amritha Chandra Raju, adding a touch of flair with impeccably dressed student pilots from Class 10 as escorts.
Dr. Gopichand unfurled the school flag and ignited the Meet Flame, passing it to the school Games Captains, Siddharth Vangala and Rashmika Velugubanti. This symbolic flame marked the official commencement of the day’s exhilarating competitions, following an oath-taking ceremony and the hoisting of flags, releasing vibrant balloons into the sky.
The day featured a spectacular march past by all four Houses, an electrifying Equestrian display, and track and field events for junior, intermediate, and senior categories. The Principal, Dr. Skand Bali, presented an impressive Sports Report, commending the achievements of students throughout the year.
Four captivating Drill Displays added a unique flair to the event. ‘Beat Blitz – Dance to Fitness’ by Classes 6 and 7 showcased the school’s dedication to fitness, discipline, and teamwork. ‘Fusion Fiesta – HPS Centenary Sportathon’ by Classes 6 to 8 celebrated the school’s century of academic and athletic excellence, incorporating themes like the Chandrayaan mission and the Oscar-winning song, ‘Nattu Nattu.’
‘Unity in Diversity’ by 643 students from Classes 4 and 5 created a magnificent formation of the Shaheen building, symbolizing the school’s nurturing environment. The performance under the theme “EKAM – Oneness of the Universe” combined Yoga, Rope Malkhamb, and Silambham, embodying harmony between humans and the cosmos.
The much-anticipated Prize Distribution ceremony acknowledged and rewarded the hard work and dedication of young athletes. Taxila House secured first place in the March Past, with Ritvik Poovadan and Samhita Reddy from Class 11 (Vijaynagar House) named the fastest boy and girl of 2023.
During his speech, Chief Guest Dr. Pullela Gopichand emphasized the importance of sports and urged parents and the school management to promote sports, stating that it is the participation, not the medal, that is crucial. He concluded with a quote from JRD Tata, emphasizing the importance of providing opportunities for the talented and capable.
The coveted Best All-round Trophy was awarded to Taxila House, culminating in a formal Retreat and a closing March Past, symbolizing the end of the Annual Sports Day and the continuation of tradition.
