Journey to the Roof of the World – Leh and Ladakh
After a month of eager anticipation, our adventure began with a flight to Delhi, the first leg of our journey to Leh. However, our excitement quickly turned to disappointment when we found out our connecting flight was cancelled. Despite this setback, our spirits lifted as we settled into the Royal Plaza Hotel in Delhi, a welcome respite before our adventure truly began.
The next morning, with fingers crossed for better weather, we boarded another flight to Leh. As we landed, snow-capped mountains greeted us, their majestic beauty immediately erasing the memory of yesterday’s disappointment. Our stay at the Zik Zik (Happy) Hotel began on a high note, with perfect weather setting the tone for the days ahead.
Our journey took us to the dizzying heights of Khardung La Pass. The drive was a mix of awe and apprehension as we navigated the winding roads. The stunning vistas made every moment worthwhile. Descending into Nubra Valley, we experienced an unforgettable camel ride. That night, nestled in a cozy cottage under a star-studded sky, it felt like we had stepped onto another planet.
We began the day by a tranquil stream before heading to the ethereal Pangong Lake, the longest saltwater lake that touches China, Tibet, and India. Despite the biting cold at -3°C, the lake’s ever-changing hues, reflecting the surrounding mountains, were a sight to behold. Our guide revealed the secret behind the lake’s colors, making the experience even more magical. We also visited the iconic “3 Idiots” shooting spot, adding a touch of Bollywood to our adventure.
Leh’s rich heritage unfolded before us at the Leh Museum and Shanti Stupa. We delved into the history, art, and spirituality of Ladakh, gaining a deeper appreciation for this unique region. The day’s highlight was exploring the bustling Leh Market. The warmth and politeness of the locals were heartwarming, leaving a lasting impression on us.
Our early morning trek was exhilarating. Reaching the summit, we felt a rush of adrenaline and a sense of accomplishment unlike anything else. Later, we visited Magnetic Hill, where the mysterious phenomenon of cars rolling uphill left us in awe and sparked lively debates.
The Hall of Fame war memorial was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Kargil War. Capt. Vijayant Thapar’s story moved us deeply, especially his father’s touching words: “You have left us with the pride of being parents of a worthy son and lifetime pain for having lost a child we loved.”
Next, we witnessed the stunning confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers at Sangam. Enjoying lunch by the riverside was a serene and memorable experience. The day ended with a lively dance party, a joyful celebration of our incredible journey.
As we prepared to leave, our hearts were heavy. The breathtaking landscapes, the kindness of the people, and the incredible experiences had made these days feel like a dream. We departed with hearts full of gratitude and memories that would last a lifetime.
Our journey through Leh and Ladakh was nothing short of magical. From the thrill of high mountain passes to the serenity of ancient monasteries, every moment was an adventure. This trip gave us more than just memories; it offered us a profound appreciation for the beauty and resilience of this incredible region.
