Screening of “Other Kohinoors: The Rocks of Hyderabad”

On the 28th of March, 11:30 AM, the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, had the privilege of screening the documentary film “Other Kohinoors: The Rocks of Hyderabad.” Produced and directed by Ms. Uma Magal, with co-production by Ms. Mahnoor Yar Khan, this insightful film aimed to shed light on the significance of the rocks in Hyderabad’s landscape and culture.

The event was graced by esteemed guests, Dr. Drona Srinivasa Sarma, Chief Scientist at CSIR-NGRI, and Shri S.S. Prasad, a retired environmentalist who has been actively contributing to the conservation efforts since 2020. Their presence added value to the screening, emphasizing the importance of conserving natural habitats and ecosystems.

Created by Uma Magal under her production company, Fenugreek, the documentary sought to increase awareness about Hyderabad’s rocks, which are intricately connected to the city’s cultural and historical identity. It delved into the multifaceted impact of these rocks on Hyderabadi life, shaping everything from local place names to folklore, textile designs, culinary traditions, and even the nuances of everyday language.
The film highlighted the unique terrain and ecological wealth of Hyderabad, emphasizing the urgent need to preserve these invaluable natural spaces. It celebrated not only the ecological significance but also the cultural richness fostered by the rocks, including literature, arts, and cuisine.

Ms. Uma Magal’s personal reflection on her relationship with the rocks, akin to writing a love letter, resonated with the audience, instilling a sense of wonder, affection, respect, and gratitude towards these natural wonders.
The screening sparked meaningful discussions among the students, leading to an enlightening interactive session with Dr. D. Srinivasa Sarma and Shri S.S. Prasad. The students recognized the pressing need to conserve the remaining rocks, acknowledging their significance surpassing even that of the famed Kohinoor diamond.

The Hyderabad Public School has always been committed to conserving rocks as an integral part of its terrestrial ecosystem. The school’s landscaping reflects this commitment, ensuring that the “other Kohinoors” – the rocks within its premises – are preserved for future generations to appreciate and cherish.

The event not only educated the students but also inspired them to take action in safeguarding the environment and preserving Hyderabad’s natural heritage for posterity. Through such initiatives, the school continues to nurture a sense of environmental stewardship among its students, fostering a deep connection with nature and the cultural heritage of Hyderabad.
